Heidi Dunkley grew up in the same town her whole life. But that all changed on her 19th birthday when, as a freshly married couple, she and her husband moved to New York. Heidi shares about the experiences she had as she was thrust into a new life that was very different from the way she grew up.
In this interview, Heidi talks about how only having her husband in a new place forced her to be with herself and open up to the Spirit.
Although the move to New York from Utah was meant to be just one year, Heidi, her husband and their growing family ended up staying for 10 years. She shares the lessons she learned about seeing the hand of God in her life and learning how to love others unconditionally.
Overall, Heidi gives her witness that Jesus Christ is accessible to each of us. As she shared during the interview. “The more I’ve been willing to feel, the more I’m able to see.”
Journal Questions
Heidi talked about how being away from everything she was familiar with helped her to see God more fully in her life. One of the things she said that helped her was to remember past times when God had given her a witness. She mentioned Oliver Cowdrey’s experience with the Lord in D&C 6:22-23. Read and ponder this scripture. Think about times when God has spoken peace to you. Write your thoughts in your journal so you’ll be able to read them when you need them in the future.
Much of Heidi’s experience revolved around learning to love others. How can you get out of your own circle to learn from others? How can you take the time to hear others’ stories and share your own?
Heidi talked about how accessible Christ has been to her when she opened up to feel Him. She shared, “The more I’ve been willing to feel, the more I’m able to see.” What do you feel prompted to feel more deeply? What is the Savior trying to help you see?
